Sales Leadership Vacancy Cost Calculator
An open sales leadership seat costs you in two ways at once: the revenue the role owns underperforms while nobody runs it, and your executives pay for the gap in their own hours. This works out both from three numbers you already know. It takes under a minute, and it asks for no email.
How this is calculated
Nothing here is hidden, because a number you cannot check is a number you cannot use. The estimate is the sum of two figures.
Revenue at risk
(annual revenue ÷ 12) × months open × 20%
While the seat is empty, the revenue that role owns underperforms. The 20% factor draws on Gallup's Q12 meta-analysis of 183,806 business units, which found an 18% gap in sales productivity between the best, and the worst, led teams, and on Sales Management Association research linking coaching quality to quota attainment. We are not claiming a vacancy automatically costs 20% of revenue. We are giving leadership teams a way to model what underperformance may already be costing them.
Executive coverage cost
hours per week × 4.33 × months × $200
What you pay when your CEO or leadership team runs the seat instead of running their own. $200/hour is a conservative executive-time assumption, not salary, grounded in BLS wage and benefits data for chief executives (about $185/hour fully loaded) and Heidrick & Struggles' PE-backed CEO compensation survey (about $252/hour at companies under $50M revenue).
It is an estimate, deliberately. It does not attempt to price the wrong hire you make in a hurry, the pipeline that quietly stops being built, or the second search twelve months later. The point is not precision. It is that the cost of waiting is rarely zero, and almost never as small as it feels.
The number is the symptom
Knowing what the vacancy costs tells you the size of the problem. It does not tell you why the seat is still open, or why the last hire did not work. That is what the Empty Seat Diagnostic is for: eight questions across the four levers where sales leadership searches usually fail.
